Cary is the 7th largest municipality in North Carolina. Cary is currently the second most populous incorporated town in the United States. Cary is consistently named one of the safest places to live both regionally and nationally, the FBI released crime data in 2013 that actually named it the lowest in total crime rate in America among all cities with populations of 100,000-500,000.
Today's Cary began in 1750 as a settlement called Bradford's Ordinary. About 100 years later, the construction of the North Carolina Railroad between New Bern and Hillsborough went through the town, linking Bradford's Ordinary to a major transportation route. Allison Francis Page is credited with founding the town, he and his wife bought 300 acres surrounding the railraod junction in 1854 and named his development Cary, after Samuel Fenton Cary (a former Ohio Congressman and prohibitionist he admired). Cary was incorporated on April 6, 1871, with Page becoming the first Mayor.
Cary has a council-manager government; the mayor and council members serve a four-year term, with half of the council seats being up for election each odd-numbered year. Four of the six council seats are elected by district; the remaining two seats are at-large representatives.
The Cary Tennis Park, USA Baseball National Training Complex, and the WakeMed Soccer Park are located in Cary, a NCAA Championship City. They have a reputation as an amateur sports Mecca by hosting dozens of championships. In fact, Cary has hosted or is scheduled to host 18 NCAA Championships and 29 ACC Championships.
Nearby Research Triangle Park is one of the largest in the country, prospering Cary's job market. The Park already employs 39,000 people at far too many high tech companies to name here. A new master development plan released in 2012 is going to allow room for more than 100,000 more employees.
In the last five years alone Cary's population has grown by 20,000! It is suspected that all those jobs in the Triangle, all the great educational opportunities, and the safety factor bring the people to this town in droves. Not to mention its great location, you can be lying on the beach or hiking in the mountains within a couple of hours drive.
